X Factor champion Joe McElderry has revealed that he didn’t consult with his former mentor Cheryl Cole before announcing that he is gay, says a report.

The 19-year-old told a tabloid newspaper that he didn’t speak to Cole before making the announcement because she was busy overcoming her battle with malaria.

He told The Sun that the Girls Aloud star is “always there” to provide him with support.

He said: “I didn’t go to Cheryl before I came out as she’s got enough on her plate at the moment, otherwise I would have done.

“She’s always there for me, always on the end of the phone.

“She’s constantly giving me advice on how to handle fame and the pressures.

Joe also said that he was looking forward to the release of his debut album.

He gushed: “I’m very happy. I can’t wait to release my album and I’m excited about the future.”
