Alexandra Burke returns to Haiti

by X Factor Blog on July 11, 2010

Alexandra Burke has returned to Haiti to see the progress made since the earthquake. The singer wanted to see how the money she helped to raise with Save the Children and The Sun’s Helping Haiti appeal had been used.

The X Factor winner first visited the country just a month after the devastating earthquake and is now returning as the six-month anniversary nears.

She told The Sun: “I can definitely see a difference from last time I was here.

“It was absolute chaos before – people were sleeping and finding shelter where they could. There was rubble and debris everywhere.

“Last time there were up to 1.8 million people homeless, now there are a million so obviously that’s a huge improvement.”

She added: “There are stalls at the side of the road where people are selling food and crafts and trying to get their lives back on track.

“The work being done is truly amazing. Everywhere you look, you can see people working so hard to make things better.

“But the rainy season is a real worry. Every night for at least an hour the sky goes black and the rain comes lashing down.

“Sitting listening to it drumming on the roof, I can’t even imagine what it must be like for those poor people sheltering in their flimsy tents and trying to stay dry.”

Burke continued: “Save The Children have achieved so much thanks to all the wonderful people who gave their time and their money to The Sun’s appeal. But there is so much more to be done.

“I’m here to see what’s being done with the money, and to remind everyone back home the people of Haiti still need our help.”
